Broadband Speeds Explained
All of our broadband tariffs are now differentiated by speed, rather than usage. Unlike most Internet service providers that offer one standard “up to” speed, we’ve launched 3 different tariffs based on various speeds achievable.
What does this mean?
Unlike other ISP's (Internet Service Providers) if your line cannot support an up to 4 or 8 Meg service then we won’t charge you for one. Depending on what speed is stable on your line, we’ll provide you with the following
Up to 8 Meg Broadband – Speeds from 5-8 Mbit/s
Up to 4 Meg Broadband – Speeds from 3-4 Mbit/s
Up to 2 Meg Broadband – Speeds up to 2 Mbit/s
What we'll provide you with
When you apply for a higher speed broadband service, we’ll endeavour to provide you with it, however if that speed cannot be provided (due to your line characteristics) we will provide you with a lower speed tariff, and charge you accordingly.
Internet Service Provider - Code of Practice
Ofcom (the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries) has put together a Code of Practice, which ensures that Internet Service Providers give you information about the speed you can expect to get. Under this Code, Jersey Telecom have committed to:
Provide you with an estimate of the maximum speed you can get at point of sale
Explain clearly and simply how technical factors (such as how far you live from the exchange) may slow down the speed that you may get and give you help and advice if you can do something yourself at home to improve the situation
Offer an alternative package (if there is one), without any penalties, if the actual speed is a lot lower than their original estimate
